Recipe Hero 1.0

About 6 months ago I started working on a simple idea – a beautiful, modern recipe plugin for WordPress. A month or so after that I launched a very rough beta release, starting at 0.5. It took me a few months, but today I’m extremely happy to launch Recipe Hero 1.0.

It took me longer than it should have, but I got stuck in a mentality where everything had to be right before I pulled the trigger. That’s not the right mentality – at least in my opinion. So, today I’ve released the almost-ready one point oh.

Freemium, yo

Last week I wrote about building a freemium plugin. Recipe Hero is a freemium plugin. I’ve worked my ass of to build a viable, useful plugin that’s completely free, but I hope to profit of the eventual sale of ‘extensions’ that extend the plugin’s capabilities.

Challenges

It’s definitely difficult to decide what belongs in the free part of the plugin. I want to give users everything I can for free but I also need to make money from the project in order to continue development and build new features.

I realised that it was actually essential to keep the ‘extra’ stuff out of the core plugin. The average user won’t need the ability to embed videos for each of their instructions or include a front-end recipe submission form. So rather than bloat the core plugin with features that few will need, leading to a bad user experience for the majority, I opted to build these features into separate premium extensions.

Website

For 1.0, I also decided the website needed a refresh. It was built with the incredible Storefront (by my brogre James) and the always awesome WooCommerce.

So please, check it out, view the website and get involved on GitHub! πŸ™‚
